The Skinny

The UPPAbaby Bassinet and stand are a unique option in this review as the only product that you can carry by a handle. This product can attach to the UPPAbaby Vista stroller or clip onto the stand with relative ease. We like the quality and the attention to detail in its construction. However, we worry that the bassinet was designed for outdoor strolling, making it a poor choice for overnight sleeping. This option has padded interior sides with a canvas cover, which could impede baby's ability to breathe should their face become pressed against the edge. This one detail alone makes the UPPAbaby bassinet one we think you should leave on the stroller and avoid using for overnight sleeping.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The UPPAbaby Bassinet and Stand is a combination of a stroller accessory and a wood stand that can also be used as a hamper when baby outgrows the bassinet (with the purchase of the hamper lining).

Ease of Use

The UPPAbaby earned a fairly high score for ease of use.

Accessibility

The stand for this bassinet allows you to place the bassinet close to the bed, and the height allows for reasonably easy access, but you'll need to sit up to reach into the sleeping area to retrieve your baby.

Portability/Mobility

This product is extremely portable and will connect to a stroller for easy travel. It is lightweight and small, fitting almost anywhere. Being able to remove the bassinet from the stand makes this a more versatile option than the competition.

The UPPAbaby has an almost full canopy designed to keep the sun and elements out while strolling, but it can help limit room lighting as well.

The UPPAbaby has a painted or stained wood stand with a flat storage tray on the bottom.

Additional Features

This bassinet has a canopy (above left) and a carry handle with optional ventilation. The stand has a storage tray (above right) at the bottom and can be used later as a hamper with the purchase of the UPPAbaby hamper.

Ease of Setup

The bassinet comes put together, so you only need to unpack and open the stand. The bassinet clicks in place using the same connection points as the UPPAbaby Vista stroller.

Cleaning

The UPPAbaby mattress cover and zip-out inner liner are both machine washable while the outside of the bassinet is spot clean only.

The UPPAbaby has a cushioned fabric liner on the inside and a canvas...
The UPPAbaby has a cushioned fabric liner on the inside and a canvas cover on the outside that limits breathability. We believe that this design is suitable for strolling to protect baby from the elements, but it is not optimal for unmonitored overnight sleeping because baby's ability to breath could be severely impacted should their nose and mouth become pressed against the side.
The bottom frame of the UPPAbaby sleeping area is plastic with holes...
The bottom frame of the UPPAbaby sleeping area is plastic with holes for better air circulation. However, the bottom is covered in a nylon material making it difficult for breathing. We feel this bassinet has poor breathability.

Breathability

The UPPAbaby earned an abysmally low score for breathability. This product has some serious breathability issues, given the narrow width of the bassinet and the padded inner liner (above left) with a canvas exterior cover. It does have some holes in the base beneath the mattress pad (above right). However, this does nothing to increase the breathability of the side walls.

This is the inside between the layers of fabric on the UPPAbaby bassinet. The padding and what feels like plastic liner with the canvas exterior is virtually impossible to breathe through.

We feel the lack of mesh, and the possibility of baby ending up with his face pressed against the nylon creates a potential safety concern for unmonitored overnight sleeping. This bassinet is an accessory for the UPPAbaby Vista and is designed for outdoor strolling and protecting baby from the elements (which it does well). Still, this ability to protect a baby from the weather makes it potentially dangerous as a bassinet. For this reason, we cannot recommend using this bassinet for overnight sleeping no matter what UPPAbaby says is a suitable use.

The mattress pad on the UPPAbaby has holes in it for airflow. However, this pad is covered with fabric that limits breathability and we believe the mattress should not be considered "breathable" for this reason.

Sleep Surface

The UPPAbaby came in slightly above average for the sleeping surface. This mattress is firm but soft and did well in our tests for compression.

It provides a firm and supportive sleep surface and fits the space snugly without the ability to place fingers inside the edge. The entire bassinet will tilt slightly if you put pressure on the end or if a baby were to scoot most of their body weight to one end or the other.

The UPPAbaby bassinet tilts when you place even a small amount of pressure on the front of the bed. This is a result of the side connection points being placed further forward as opposed to in the middle.

Quality

The UPPAbaby is only average in terms of quality. UPPAbaby normally impresses us with their quality and attention to detail. There are some nice qualities about this bassinet, but the design is lacking for a bedtime sleep area. The stand is the real bummer here and is somewhat unstable, wiggles under pressure, and could cause tilting. The stand is smooth, painted wood, but the design is lacking. Overall the fit and finish of the bassinet are good with durable materials and construction with no poor stitching or random threads.

Eco-Health

The UPPAbaby earned one of the higher scores for eco-health. UPPAbaby offers more for eco-health than some of the competition and is JPMA, CPSC, and ASTM certified. The company has more transparency than most and provides the following information on its website concerning this bassinet and other UPPAbaby gear.

"Many manufacturers meet these requirements by treating their fabrics with toxic brominated and chlorinated chemicals, like PBBs and PBDEs that can be harmful to children. All UPPAbaby products meet all applicable flame retardancy standards without these potentially harmful chemicals."

We like that this bassinet is free of flame retardants, but the mattress is polyurethane, which can off-gas, hurting its overall score. The use of polyurethane in the bassinet mattresses makes a standard crib mattress seem more appealing.
